(she says that a relative once gave her a box of foil for a gift), but readers can certainly pick and choose ideas worth pursuing, according to their own comfort level. She is sometimes criticized for being too extreme, doing things like washing out plastic zipper bags to reuse them, etc. One of her recommendations was to create a “price book” where she kept track of how much various grocery items cost/best prices so that she could spot bargains. Amy extolled the virtues of cooking from scratch, secondhand shopping, do-it-yourself projects (she cut her family members’ hair, for example), and offered a really sensible, practical approach to money. Being frugal IS an alternative way to live in today’s America. The book/newsletter has the subtitle: “promoting thrift as a viable alternative lifestyle” – I think this really sums up the essence of the book and frugal living in general.

The book is a treasure trove of frugal tips and advice and insight into frugal thinking. The Tightwad Gazett e newsletter was compiled into 3 books. Eventually the newsletter was so successful that Amy was able to retire it, and the whole family was featured in an article in Money magazine in 1997 after the Dacyczyns made enough money to pay off their house, save enough for all the children’s college funds and their own retirement, and amass almost a million dollar net worth, all while Amy and her husband were in their 40s. Amy was able to stay home to raise her children and the family lived primarily on her husband’s modest pension from the Navy. They live in Maine and through money-saving techniques managed to buy their dream home in the country, putting down a substantial down payment. Dacyczyn and her husband are the parents of 6 children (now grown). In my opinion, it is one of the best books on the subject of frugality. Later it was published in book form in 3 volumes, and eventually a complete version was issued.

The Tightwad Gazette ( TG) started out as a print newsletter written by Amy Dacyczyn, published from 1989-1996, with up to 100,000 subscribers. Disclosure: I may receive a commission if you follow a affiliate link to make a purchase.
